REVIEW: Bud…Czechvar Premium Lager
By Lieutenant Lager on Aug 30, 2007 in Brew Reviews
Hey, this Czechvar is for you…not the right ring, is it? Czechvar…the imperial overlord of beers…no…Better keep your hands of my Czech Light. (Actually, I don’t think there is a Czech Light). In almost every other country besides the good ol’ U.S. of A., this decent lager goes by it’s traditional name, Budweiser. Yes, this is the beer that is better known for its legal wrangling with the King of Beers, than it is for its unique taste…and there is a reason for that.
Czechvar is not an amazing beer, but it is a passably good one. It has a somewhat unique combination of malty, sweetness up front and hoppy bitterness in the back. This mixture of flavor creates a nice mellow package overall. Additionally, Czechvar is a clean finisher with a crisp bite and beautiful golden exterior that would appeal to any Clydesdale, anywhere…not that I’m suggesting that you give beer to horses…That creates a whole new set of legal issues.
This somewhat forgettable, but pleasing beer is not a bad choice, but Reader, you can do better with your hard earned cash…If you are dead set on tasting Czechvar, be sure to discuss the courtroom antics with a drinking buddy to get your real money’s worth. That said, If you’ve got better things to converse about, I’d suggest buying a less expensive domestic.
Yes, the most remarkable thing about Czechvar is that it surely deserves the crown more so than the doppelganger from A-Busch. However, you could say that about so many other beers, the point is hardly relevant. A three out of five, if you will…

You tell ‘em, L.T. Via telegraph ideally. It’d just be so novel. Sammy Morse, where are you now?! D… de… dead? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

If I may comment–you have to love this beer for what it is: a terrific example of a Pilsner. Much like many Czech beers, there is little hoppiness, although a nice, bready aftertaste which goes well with both food and by itself. As Germany’s neighbor, this Czech lager is one of the reasons beer has such a prevalent existence on God’s great earth. Way to go, Czechvar.
