REVIEW: Atlantic Brewing Company, Coal Porter

Coal Porter

What!?! Lieutenant Lager is reviewing a porter! There are so many lager beers out there, you think I could stay out of the Sarge’s barracks…well, even if the Sarge comes after me guns blazing for crossing into stout territory, my words must be heard…That said, I doubt the Sarge can readily get this beer at his local mess hall.

I generally find porters to be strange creatures, but Coal Porter is damn tasty. This is a lighter porter than you’re probably used to, but do not be fooled, this dark rouge brew is hearty enough for any Bar Harbor boatman. The roasted malt accounts for the “coal” in this porter, and it gives off a delicious coffee flavor, making it reminiscent to Capt. Beer’s favorite, Yuengling. In fact, I’m pretty sure I love this beer because its coffee flavor is so strong and it’s very refreshing at the same time. (Being that this Lieutenant likes to have a good time in the evening, he has learned to enjoy fine coffee in the morning). Tired seahands might also catch a slight taste of vanilla. It’s rare to find highly drinkable porters, and this one is perfect for those landlubbers who generally stay away from this style of beer.

Being that the folks at the Atlantic Brewing Company want you to buy lots of their beer, they have been helpful enough to put up a listing of stores (by State) carrying their different brews. I’m afraid you Pacific-coasters are going to have to drink something else…
