REVIEW: Maredsous Triple 10º- what an asskicker!

You know, you’ve gotta hand it to those monks. Not only to they baer the burden of copying bibles and praying for our sins, but they also furrow their brows constantly over the great responsibility of keeping the clergy and laypeople alike smashed at all times. Enter the ultimate Triple Belgian Style Ale: Maredsous Triple 10º, brought to us by the people who make fine ales like Duvel! The bottle reminds this Sergeant he hasn’t been to see Father So n’ So in quite a while, considering the very label looks like a friggin’ church. There’s like stained glass and stuff on this bottle! What’s up with that? The bottle’s surely not the best part of this ale, but it contains some nice information in random Latin and Romantic languages alike, as in “Benedictijnestraditie”, and “Refermented in the Bottle”. One can only guess what these strange texts actually mean! Now it’s only an 11.2-oz bottle, and the glass is shaped in this very funky fashion. Upon opening, the Triple actually doesn’t fizz and foam like most I’ve seen, and the bottle itself is remarkably thicker than other beer bottles, likely due to the higher pressure involved when the ale is refermented in the bottle. It’s a good even pour, obviously intended to be enjoyed out of a good ale goblet rather than a Pilsner flute. The shade is a deep, reddish, mostly clear gold rather than some Belgian ales which are straw-colored. It features a thick and sweet texture that’s not overpowering, but still features that ‘up your nose’ characteristic of other Belgian ales. The refermentation is nothing new when it comes to a Triple, but this beer does it so right. All in all, I’d call this even a more flavorful answer to Duvel. It’s got all the power that most other Belgian ales feature, but it also has a lot more character, right down to the bottle.
this is my first comment here. i’ve been subscribed to your feed for about 3 weeks and really enjoy your reviews…though your pallet seems to differ from mine slightly (as with the sam adams black lager…yuck). But we seem to share more similarities than differences.
i love all the maredsous beers i’ve tried.
i must say, the first 2 sentences of this post are priceless…i’m gonna stumble it for that!

Sounds like a fine brau, Sarge. Duvel is a bit too sweet for this Captain’s footlocker… or… fridge… so perhaps Maredsous is a way to temper the sweet with the winey, wheatiness I like to get from the Low Countries.

Damn… the Kolonel wishes he’d had some of those extra-strength bottles when he went all-in on his tripel and ended up with a kitchen full of exploded beer and bottle shrapnel. I sure hope that when I get back home in 3 weeks my tripel has finally simmered down, else I’ma have to whip a little over-carbonated bottle ayissssss. Perhaps my Abbey Dubel will have fared better.
Drinkin a Sam Adams Scotch Ale as we speak. Personally like this better than the Black Ale. Smokey but not… too smokey, ye know? Aye… ye know.

That is a really great beer. Make sure the hangover prevention is in tact…
