Ale on lees indeed, beervolk. Don’t try this beer unless you like beer. If you like beer, try this beer. It’s pretty wild. Kolonel Tripel provided this Unibroue offering—along with about ten other kinds of brau, some of them homebrew, that he and General German had picked up as Sgt. Stout and I were trucking […]

Rye in a beer? That’s right, rye is no longer limited to the mile high pastrami sandwich at your favorite Jewish Deli. (regrettable use of “mile high”). Why, in Georgia, they put rye in beer!….when they have enough water to make beer…Terrapin, the venerable micro-brewery (ok…they are five years old, but it seems like they […]

OK, maybe they’re holding onto past glory… maybe the beer’s namesake (Blue Ribbon) is in fact based off of an award they won, um, 112 years ago… but the beer is a staple of moderately priced* and refreshing** American lager, it helped a lot of us get through college, and, sadly, from the […]

Hey peeps:
My apologies to all five of you who read my posts; I have not provided an update in three long weeks. Those weeks have flown right by–where in hades did April go? Seemed like it was Easter, then whoosh! A giant suckin’ sound!
Anyhoo, I decided to give my most loyal readers a two-fer: a brew […]

It began with a late night conversation five weeks ago with General German.I had just finished an IPA, bottled it only days before, and I was pondering what the next brew-to-be was on my list. The good General suggested I visit the podcasting of basicbrewing.com. Good chaps they are, gents who brew and chat […]

Ah, the first sweet sips of Summer Ale. I’ve dealt with the fact that winter is long over and soon it’s gonna be hotter’n a hoot in hell with fire sauce on top. Al Gore was right, we’ve already had a record high hot day this year, etc etc, damn. But we’ll make it through […]

Fellow HoB readers:
Today, I am tasting a truly remarkable vanilla porter from Breckenridge Brewing in Colorado. The problem is, the bottle says nothing of ABV, so my spelling and grammar may get worse as this post continues. Actually, I just looked it up; it’s only 4.7%. But that vanilla kick really makes it one to […]

Aloha, Tesla! Like the coil? And its inventor. Yeah. This beer rules! It can “catch a wave” anytime and always “hang on for 10 seconds!” Charlie don’t surf! Yeah. So last weekend—as I’ve briefly mentioned—the horse racing event we attended was complimented by a lil’ microbrew festival! There were some 20 beers on tap, many […]

To begin this post, I would like to quote a stanza from the Byrds’ 1965 song Turn Turn Turn:
To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn turn turn
And a time for every purpose, under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die;
A time to clean up exploded beers, a time to finally find […]

Beer drinkers (let’s not euphemize it…we drink lots of tasty, tasty beer): I am proud to report that the once-thought-terrible IPA I made actually turned out pretty good. It’s clear, malty, bitter, and has an exceptionally thick, creamy head on it. Hallelujah.
